“My 2007 fellowship in poetry came at a crucial point in my life. I was a mother to two young sons, and we were just getting settled back into our home after Hurricane Katrina. I had almost forgotten I was a poet. But the NEA support was a vote of confidence. It was a nudge, a reminder that as a poet I was part of a conversation and that I had valuable contributions to make. I cherish being a part of that conversation, and I treasure all of the voices to come.”
