In 2007, Washington established a state poet laureate position, which is currently held by Claudia Castro Luna who was appointed to a two-year term in 2018. Luna is the author of Killing Marias (Two Sylvias Press, 2017) and the chapbook This City (Floating Bridge Press, 2016). 

Anastacia Renee Tolbert was named poet laureate of Seattle, Washington, in 2017. Tolbert will serve a two-year term.

In 2017, Mark Anderson was named poet laureate of Spokane, Washington. Anderson will serve a two-year term.

Kellie Richardson was named poet laureate of Tacoma, Washington, in 2017. Richardson will also serve a two-year term.
