On December 11, 2003, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich named Kevin Stein the state’s fourth poet laureate, following Howard Austin, Carl Sandburg, and Gwendolyn Brooks. Stein has published eight poetry collections and chapbooks, three scholarly books, and two poetry anthologies.

Hands on Stanzas
Join the Chicago Poetry Center to celebrate a year of student poetry. The event, in which participants from elementary and middle school grades read original poems on stage, features teachers and students from each poet-in-residence classroom. The CPC's Hands on Stanzas program places Chicago poets/teaching artists in Chicago public school classrooms to spend a full year reading, writing, discussing, and performing poetry with students.
 
Readers include Rosanna Warren, Angela Jackson, Calvin Forbes, Christina Pugh, Chris Green, Tony Trigilio, Simone Meunch, Erika T. Wurth, Valerie Wallace, Helen Spica, Sebastian Bitticks, and Phillip James Cozzi.
