Hedgebrook is a publicly funded, not-for-profit retreat for female writers of all ages and from all cultural backgrounds. Overlooking Puget Sound on Whidbey Island in Washington state, the Hedgebrook community seeks through principles of land stewardship to balance human needs with those of the earth while providing a nurturing environment in which creativity can thrive. In a setting of meadow, forest, and garden, cottages house six individuals at a time, forming a small village of working writers. The cottages create a place for stories, poems, novels, plays, essays, and films. The retreat provides privacy and solitude for approximately 40 residents per year to work during the day; in the evenings, a community exists for the residents to share their ideas and work.
